Paddling/Kayaking
Paddling trips are an enjoyable group activity of the Carteret County Wildlife Club (CCWC), happening usually spring through fall. A typical paddle lasts from 3 to 6 hours, including a lunch break (and a chance to take a dip if the weather is hot). Most paddles are on flat water so no experience is required. Tricky situations occasionally occur when the water is exceptionally low or when logs or trees obstruct the channel. There is no charge to participate and arrangements can generally be made to borrow a kayak or to find a paddling partner if requested.
Locations include local sounds and streams, including:
Bogue Sound
Newport River
Harlowe Canal
Club members also travel to more distant rivers, including
Fishing Creek in Nash County
Cantentnea Creek
Brices Creek
Black River
various sections of the Neuse River
Occasionally CCWC has hosted overnight camping/paddling trips, including
Little Fishing Creek at Medoc Mountain State Park
James River in western Virginia
