Weetock Trail

The Weetock trail is located in the Croatan National Forest approximately 11 miles north of Cape Carteret on NC-58. The trail travels from the north end of Forest Service Road 120 along Holston Creek to Haywood Landing, then loosely parallels the White Oak River to Long Point Rd., very close to the Long Point boat launch and primitive camping site.

The name Weetock comes from the original Algonquian name for the White Oak River. A beautiful walk in any season, the trail passes through hardwood ridges, cypress gum-palmetto swamps, pine flatwoods, beaver ponds, managed wildlife clearings, springs, and creeks. Archeological sites near the trail span the breadth of man's history on the Carolina coastal plain. Wildlife abounds in this part of the Croatan, and hikers might spot bear or turkey sign or an alligator in a nearby swamp. Springtime blooms include mayapple, buck-eye and blood root.

The Weetock trail was marked by members of the Carteret County Wildlife Club (CCWC) in 2001-2003 at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, expending over 275 hours surveying and marking the trail.

Weetock trail begins at NC-58 and ends at Hawyood Landing, per Google 8-16-2024.
